Where & When

Location: Prieska Park, under the trees behind the play area next to Prieska Road. Entering the park on Prieska Road is the quickest way to the bins.

When: Most Saturdays (weather dependent). Dates and times are listed on our Events page, and reminders go out on the neighbourhood WhatsApp groups.

How We’ll Compost in Sybrand Park

While we’re doing our part to help the planet, we also get to connect as neighbours—simple habits we share, together. Start by collecting scraps at home; on Saturday, enjoy the park (boerie, coffee, quick class), say hello to a few friendly faces, and drop off with a warm glow.

Composting steps summary

What We Can Accept

Our site is small and volunteer-run, and we don’t have tools (like chippers) to process garden waste effectively. To keep the system working and odour-free, we’re focusing on kitchen scraps only for now. Volunteers will layer your scraps with dry browns and manage the pile so the balance stays right.

✅ Add

  • Fruit & veg scraps, peels
  • Coffee grounds
  • Tea leaves (no plastic tea bags)
  • Crushed eggshells

⛔ Skip

  • NO garden waste, meat, or bones
  • Cooked/greasy food, oils/fats, dairy
  • Pet waste, diapers
  • Glossy/coloured paper, plastic tea bags
  • Large branches (chip first)
  • Weeds with seeds or invasive roots

As the project grows—and if we secure the right equipment—we’ll review these limits.

Our Composting System

Location: With permission from the City of Cape Town Parks Department, the bin is located in Prieska Park.

Containment: Secure, lidded, rodent-resistant bins with clear signage.

Operations: Weekly volunteer rota and mixing checks.

Hygiene: Tool-only handling; fresh scraps are immediately covered with browns.

Your Food Scraps at Home

Almost anything works as a countertop caddy: a clean ice‑cream tub or other lidded container, a metal tin, a coffee canister, or a small pedal bin. Paper bags or newspaper wraps also work well.

How We’ll Maintain It

To keep the site clean, safe, and odour-free, we follow this simple weekly routine:

  • Weekly rota (Saturdays): open, check, tidy, close.
  • Cover every drop with dry browns (leaves/cardboard); kitchen scraps only.
  • Right mix: ~2–3 parts browns : 1 part greens; turn for airflow.
  • Moisture: wrung-out sponge (≈40–60%); add water if dry, browns if wet.
  • Hygiene & security: lids closed/locked, site swept, tool-only handling.
  • Log each visit: odour, moisture, actions—transparent and trackable.
  • Rodent-resistant bins; quick response to any issues.

Fast fixes: Smell/flies → add 2–3 buckets browns & turn • Too wet → fork in browns, brief air, re-close • Too dry/not heating → small greens layer + splash of water.
