FAQs

Will it be unhygienic or smelly?

No. Done right, compost smells earthy (not rotten). We prevent odours by accepting kitchen scraps only (no meat/dairy/oils), covering every drop-off with dry browns (leaves/cardboard), turning/aerating the pile regularly, and keeping lids closed and the area tidy. Home tip: store scraps in the freezer until drop-off.

What about pests (rats, flies, dogs, birds)?

We reduce attraction by excluding meat/dairy, keeping lids closed, covering fresh scraps with browns, and keeping the area clean. If activity is noticed, we adjust the carbon mix, turning schedule, and add extra covers (e.g., hessian). Pet waste is never accepted.

Is it a public-health concern?

We use source separation (no high-risk materials), closed containers, tool-only handling, sanitiser at the bay, and immediate covering with browns to suppress vectors and odour. Still concerned? Visit on Saturdays when we open the bins—we’ll walk you through it.

Is the site secure? Can vagrants/animals access it?

The bins are lidded and locked, with clear rules and regular volunteer checks. We exclude edible attractants (meat/dairy) and respond quickly to any issues reported.

Can you collect from homes?

Right now we’re running park drop-off on Saturdays. If you need help getting your container to the park, let us know—we’ll try to match you with a nearby volunteer. If there’s enough interest, we’ll pilot a street-by-street collection day.

Where exactly do I put my scraps?

Collect during the week (or freeze them). On Saturday, bring your container to the compost bins in Prieska Park. We’ll share the pin and times on the neighbourhood WhatsApp groups.

Do I need a special container?

No. Low-cost options include a clean ice-cream tub or other lidded container, a paper bag, or a newspaper wrap. Please avoid plastic and “compostable” plastic bags (they don’t break down well in our system). If you want a countertop caddy, see Drop Off.

I don’t cook much / I bury scraps in my garden—should I still join?

Yes—small amounts help. This project offers a shared, tidy option and supports neighbours who can’t compost at home.

I already separate my food waste—how can I help others?

You’re a Compost Champion already! Do drop-off demos, help with light maintenance, and join the bin-opening rota (weekly rotation so no one carries it alone). Ready to jump in? See Volunteers.

Can I take compost home?

Yes. Contributors can collect a share when batches finish. We’ll also reserve compost for verge beds and street trees.
